HIM: Hidden In Masculinity

2023

“HIM: Hidden In Masculinity” explores the often concealed aspects of male identity across diverse backgrounds, cultures, nationalities, and religions.

This series captures men in a studio setting, symbolising the performative and constrained nature of modern masculinity. Using the studio as a metaphorical stage and a spotlight to represent societal scrutiny, each portrait highlights the intense pressure on men to conform to societal expectations.

Textile coverings signify the societal 'masks' that hide true identities, while tape over eyes and mouths illustrates the suppression of male voices and visions. Through these visual metaphors, “HIM” reveals the hidden struggles and limitations that shape male behaviour today.

By shedding light on these constraints, the series aims to spark dialogue about the impact of societal pressures on men, encouraging a deeper understanding and reflection on modern masculinity. A society that oppresses and categories  a group of people for the benefit of another is not moving in the right direction. It is crucial to recognise  and challenge these dynamics to foster a more equitable and understanding world for everyone.
